EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph print showcases the majestic HMS Hero, a second-class battleship of the Royal Navy during the late 19th century. Painted by renowned artist William Frederick Mitchell, this artwork captures the grandeur and power of this historic warship. Commissioned in 1888 as part of the Conqueror class, HMS Hero served a unique role as a tender to the gunnery school HMS Excellent at Portsmouth. Although her main armament, a ram, was already outdated upon entering service, she played an important role in training future naval officers. The print depicts HMS Hero proudly sailing through rough seas with billowing smoke emanating from her funnels. The white ensign flag flutters atop her mast, symbolizing British naval supremacy. Against a backdrop of vast blue waters and distant geographical features, this image evokes both awe and admiration for Britain's maritime heritage. Sadly, after two decades of service to her country, HMS Hero met its ultimate fate as it was sunk deliberately in 1908 to serve as target practice for other ships. However brief its active duty may have been, this print immortalizes the ship's legacy and reminds us of its significance within naval warfare history. Preserved within "Her Majesty's Navy Including Its Deeds and Battles" by Lieutenant Chas Rathbone Low (Volume II), published by JS Virtue & Co in London between 1890-1893; this artwork stands not only as an artistic masterpiece but also as a testament to Britain's proud naval tradition during the nineteenth century.
