Grey-Croft," Stephen Swete Cummins' house in Huntting Lane, East Hampton, New York, was captured in this stunning black-and-white photograph taken in 1913 by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston. The architectural masterpiece was designed by Isaac Henry Green Jr. for Lorenzo Guernsey Woodhouse, but it was Emma Woodhouse Cummins, the former wife of Lorenzo Guernsey Woodhouse and later wife of Stephen Swete Cummins, who is responsible for the beautiful landscaping of the estate. Emma Woodhouse Cummins, born in 1846, had previously been married to Lorenzo Guernsey Woodhouse, the uncle of Lorenzo E. Woodhouse. In 1906, she married Stephen Swete Cummins. After her first husband's death, she wed the poet and editor of Lyric Magazine, Virginia Kent Cummins. The serene riverbank and flowering plants in the photograph reflect the tranquility and beauty of the estate.
