EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in ancient Rome - "The Gauls in Rome, 1890". The image depicts a group of elderly senators seated in the Forum, their faces etched with concern and determination. Created by an unknown artist, this engraving is part of the renowned book "Cassells Illustrated Universal History" by Edmund Ollier. In 390 BC, the Gauls invaded Rome and wreaked havoc upon the city. Despite their valiant efforts to defend themselves, many senators lost their lives during this brutal attack. However, some survivors remained steadfastly seated in the Forum as a symbol of resilience. The captured scene showcases these surviving Romans gesturing with hands raised as if engaged in intense discussions about how to protect their beloved city from future invasions. Their shadows cast dark silhouettes against the backdrop of ancient ruins. To prevent further devastation, these resilient Romans were forced to pay gold to appease the Gauls and ensure they would depart peacefully. This event marked a turning point for Rome as it prompted them to strengthen their military forces and fortify their city walls. As we gaze at this monochrome portrait frozen in time, we are reminded of both the triumphs and tribulations that shaped ancient Rome's history. It serves as a powerful testament to human resilience when faced with adversity – an enduring reminder that even amidst darkness, hope can be found through unity and strategic planning.
