Anaximines (fl c500 BC), Ancient Greek philosopher, 1493
Anaximines (fl c500 BC), Ancient Greek philosopher, 1493. With Thales and Anaximander, Anaximenes was one of three great thinkers from Miletus. Like the other two philosophers, Anaximenes believed that all the diversity of nature was derived from a single basic fundamental element. Whereas Thales believed that element was water and Anaximander considered it to be a form of matter which he called the apeirion, Anaximenes believed air to be the basic form of matter. From Liber chronicarum mundi (Nuremberg Chronicle) by Hartmann Schedel. (Nuremberg, 1493)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Anaximenes, an ancient Greek philosopher who lived around 500 BC. Alongside Thales and Anaximander, he was one of the great thinkers from Miletus. In this portrait, we see a bearded man with a contemplative expression, embodying the wisdom and intellect that defined his occupation. Anaximenes' philosophical beliefs centered around the idea that all diversity in nature stemmed from a single fundamental element. While Thales believed it to be water and Anaximander considered it as apeirion (a form of matter), Anaximenes proposed that air was the basic building block of everything. The woodcut technique used to create this image adds depth and texture to his features, emphasizing his importance as a scholar during ancient Greece. This print is part of Liber chronicarum mundi (Nuremberg Chronicle) by Hartmann Schedel, published in Nuremberg in 1493. As we gaze upon this portrayal, we are reminded of the profound influence these early philosophers had on shaping our understanding of science and philosophy today. The monochrome aesthetic further enhances its timeless quality, allowing us to connect with Anaximenes across centuries. This remarkable piece serves as a testament to human curiosity and intellectual exploration throughout history – an enduring tribute to one man's quest for knowledge amidst the vast mysteries of existence.
