Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696-1787), was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, scholastic philosopher and theologian. He was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI (1765-1846). Pope Pius IX (1792-1878) proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church in 1871. Alphonsus Ligouri is also know as the patron saint of confessors
