7338107 The paddle steamer Ariel, 1831 (oil on canvas) by Walters, Samuel (1811-82); 72.4x120.7 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Samuel Walters
A scene showing shipping on the Wirral, now known as New Brighton, Liverpool. In the background is the Perch Rock Fort and Lighthouse. The paddle steamer in the painting has always been thought to show the Ariel'. Formerly called the Arrow she was built in 1821-1822, and went into straight into service at Dover. She was transferred to the mail service in April 1825 and it is possible that she is shown visiting Liverpool between 1825 and 1833, en route for Ireland. The Arrow was taken over by the admiralty in 1837 and renamed Ariel'. She continued to be the Dover packet until 1846. The original Caird purchase record for the picture states that, while on the Dover run, Ariel was the vessel which brought over Prince Albert to marry Queen Victoria. The painting is signed and dated Walters and Son 1831'.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas painting by Samuel Walters captures the paddle steamer 'Ariel' in all her glory as she navigates the waters near New Brighton, Liverpool in 1831. The intricate details of the ship and surrounding landscape transport us back to a time when steam-powered vessels ruled the seas.
The 'Ariel', formerly known as the 'Arrow', was a vital part of maritime history, serving as a mail carrier and Dover packet before being renamed by the admiralty in 1837. It is believed that this very ship may have transported Prince Albert to marry Queen Victoria, adding an extra layer of historical significance to this already captivating scene.
Walters expertly depicts the bustling activity on board the 'Ariel', with sailors hard at work against a backdrop of Perch Rock Fort and Lighthouse. The play of light and shadow on the water adds depth and movement to the composition, drawing viewers into this moment frozen in time.
As we gaze upon this masterpiece from the National Maritime Museum in London, we can't help but marvel at both Walters' skill as an artist and the enduring legacy of ships like the 'Ariel' that helped shape our world's history.
