The illustration is taken from Les Artes Au Moyen Age, a renowned publication in Paris dating back to 1873. In Greek mythology, Hercules was assigned the laborious duty of cleaning the Augean stables, which had not been tended to for years and were filled with an immense amount of filth. Demonstrating his incredible strength and determination, he successfully completed this seemingly impossible task in a single day. However, upon completion, King Augeas deceitfully reneged on their agreement and refused to honor his promise of payment.
