EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic moment when Hercules, the legendary hero of ancient Greece, slays King Augeas after being refused payment for his arduous task. The illustration is taken from Les Artes Au Moyen Age, a renowned publication in Paris dating back to 1873. In Greek mythology, Hercules was assigned the laborious duty of cleaning the Augean stables, which had not been tended to for years and were filled with an immense amount of filth. Demonstrating his incredible strength and determination, he successfully completed this seemingly impossible task in a single day. However, upon completion, King Augeas deceitfully reneged on their agreement and refused to honor his promise of payment. Driven by a sense of justice and enraged by this betrayal, Hercules took matters into his own hands. This powerful image showcases him confronting King Augeas with unwavering resolve as he prepares to deliver retribution for both the king's refusal to pay and his dishonorable actions. The scene depicted here serves as a reminder that even heroes face injustice at times but are capable of standing up against it. It encapsulates the timeless struggle between power and integrity while immortalizing one of Hercules' most significant labors – an act that has become synonymous with courage and righteousness throughout history.
