EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing a glimpse of history, this poignant print showcases the once majestic Shiremark Mill in Capel, Surrey. Taken on 19th May 1948, it portrays a small boy standing by the derelict windmill, its towering structure now reduced to only two remaining sails. Built back in 1774 and serving as the last working mill in Surrey until its closure in 1920, this rural gem held great significance for the local community. The image evokes a sense of nostalgia as we witness the mill's gradual decline over time. Its octagonal smock design stands weathered and broken amidst an idyllic countryside backdrop. Neglected and left to disrepair, this once thriving symbol of industry now serves as a haunting reminder of days gone by. Tragically, fate dealt another blow when fire consumed Shiremark Mill in 1972, reducing it to ashes forever. However, thanks to George Garland's collection at West Sussex Record Office Ref. , we can still appreciate its grandeur through his lens. This photograph transports us back to an era where kingsfold corn filled these fields and windmills dotted the landscape. It invites reflection upon our ever-changing world while honoring the rich heritage that shaped our communities.
