India: Advertising poster for Sunlight Soap featuring Vishnu and companions. 1930
Vishnu (Vi£ß╣çu) is the Supreme God of Vaishnavism, one of the three main sects of Hinduism. Vishnu is also known as Narayana and Hari. Laksmi is the wife of Vishnu. The Vishnu Sahasranama declares Vishnu as Paramatman (supreme soul) and Parameshwara (supreme God). It describes Vishnu as the all-pervading essence of all beings, the master of--and beyond--the past, present and future, the creator and destroyer of all existences, one who supports, preserves, sustains and governs the universe and originates and develops all elements within. Though he is usually depicted as light blue, as are his incarnations some other depictions of Vishnu exist as green-bodied, and in the Kurma Purana he is described as colorless and with red eyes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an advertising poster for Sunlight Soap, featuring the divine figure of Vishnu and his companions. Created in 1930, this artwork beautifully blends elements of art, graphic design, and propaganda to promote the popular soap brand. Vishnu, known as the Supreme God of Vaishnavism in Hinduism, is depicted here alongside his wife Lakshmi. The poster highlights Vishnu's significance as Paramatman (supreme soul) and Parameshwara (supreme God), emphasizing his role as the all-pervading essence of all beings. It portrays him as the creator and destroyer of all existences while also being the master of past, present, and future. The artistic style employed in this poster adds a touch of elegance to its overall appeal. While Vishnu is typically portrayed with a light blue complexion like his incarnations, this particular depiction presents him with a green body. Interestingly enough, ancient texts such as the Kurma Purana describe him as colorless with red eyes. As we delve into history through images like these, we gain insight into not only India's rich cultural heritage but also its advertising practices from bygone eras. This photograph serves as a visual testament to how artistry was utilized to captivate audiences and promote products during that time period.
