EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a bygone era, showcasing the valuable freehold land and minerals at Brightside that were up for auction in 1852. The image transports us back to a time when Benjamin Rose, esquire, owned this remarkable estate. Lot 1 takes center stage, featuring the charming old White Swan public house. Nestled in the thriving village of Brightside and conveniently located near the railway station, it was occupied by James Ashmore. Surrounding this establishment are lush gardens and vacant land, along with an adjacent cottage inhabited by James Penistone. Lot 2 showcases a picturesque dwelling house and adjoining lands under Mr. James Whitton's care. Lot 3 highlights a plantation area known as House Croft and far House Croft. Lot 4 encompasses Near Pease Field while Lot 5 boasts Far Cow Croft and Near Cow Croft along Jenkin Lane. The enchantment continues with Lot 6 encompassing Upper Pease Field and Middle Pease Field also fronting Jenkin Lane. Lastly, Lot 7 reveals invaluable beds of coal and other minerals beneath lots 1-6 as well as various other areas. The allure of this land lies not only in its potential commercial use but also its suitability for residential development. With its south-facing slope offering breathtaking views across the Dun Valley, it presents an idyllic setting for building homes amidst nature's splendor. Preserved within Sheffield Local Studies Library's archives, this historical gem provides a glimpse into Brightside's past glory while igniting our imagination about what once was on offer during that momentous sale in September of 1852.
