Tasmanian wolf in forest

Tasmanian wolf (Thylacinus cynocephalus), in forest. Also called the thylacine, this is a species of marsupial that is considered extinct. Unrelated to the dog or wolf, the thylacine was about the size of a small wolf, making it the largest marsupial carnivore in recent times. The short, coarse hair was brown with black stripes across the back. Fossils of the species have been found in New Guinea, Australia and Tasmania, but it declined due to the introduction of dogs by man and through trapping by farmers. The last confirmed sighting in the wild was in Tasmania in 1933, and the last captive animal died in 1936. None have been found since

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the elusive Tasmanian wolf, also known as the thylacine, in its natural habitat. Once considered a thriving species of marsupial, the thylacine is now sadly extinct. Unlike its name suggests, this unique creature was unrelated to dogs or wolves but shared some physical similarities with them. Resembling a small wolf in size, the thylacine held the title of being the largest carnivorous marsupial in recent times. Its short and coarse brown fur was adorned with striking black stripes across its back, adding to its distinctive appearance. Fossils of this remarkable species have been discovered in New Guinea, Australia, and Tasmania. Tragically, human interference played a significant role in their decline. The introduction of dogs by man and trapping by farmers led to their dwindling numbers over time. The last confirmed sighting of a wild thylacine occurred in Tasmania back in 1933 while the final captive animal perished three years later. Today, we are left only with photographs like this one as evidence of their existence. This image serves as a poignant reminder that despite our fascination with nature's wonders and our desire for progress and development, we must strive to protect and preserve these incredible creatures before they vanish forever from our planet's diverse tapestry of life.
