Neanderthals in summer, artwork
Neanderthals in summer, artwork. Like modern humans, Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) are members of the Homo genus. They inhabited Europe and western Asia between 230, 000 and 29, 000 years ago. They did not use complex tools but had mastery of fire and built shelters. It is thought that they had language and a complex social structure, living in small family groups and hunting for food. The male Neanderthal at left is holding the skull of a sabre-toothed cat. It is not known why Neanderthals became extinct, but one theory is that they were outcompeted by modern humans (Homo sapiens)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Neanderthals in Summer" offers a glimpse into the lives of our ancient ancestors, the Neanderthals. Like modern humans, these members of the Homo genus roamed Europe and western Asia thousands of years ago. While they may not have used complex tools like us, they possessed remarkable skills such as fire mastery and shelter-building. In this illustration, we see a male Neanderthal engrossed in conversation with his family while holding the skull of a fearsome sabre-toothed cat. The peaceful countryside setting showcases their harmonious coexistence with nature. The artist's attention to detail brings forth an image that sparks curiosity about their daily activities during prehistoric times. Although it remains uncertain why Neanderthals became extinct, one theory suggests that competition from modern humans played a role in their disappearance from the Earth's surface. Nonetheless, evidence indicates that these early humans had language abilities and lived within close-knit family groups while hunting for sustenance. The vibrant colors and intricate brushstrokes make this artwork truly mesmerizing. It serves as a reminder of our shared biological history and invites contemplation on how far humanity has come since those ancient days. This print by Science Photo Library is not only visually stunning but also provides valuable insights into our past through its depiction of Neanderthal life during summertime – a time when even our distant ancestors found solace in relaxation amidst nature's beauty.
