Infant bonobo ape and mother

Infant bonobo ape (Pan paniscus) urinating. Its mother is throwing sand over the urine. This species of chimpanzee was discovered in 1929. It lives in a matriarchal and egalitarian society where sexual activity between members plays a major role in greeting, conflict resolution and post-conflict resolution, regardless of age and sex. In the wild it is found only in a small area of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is considered to be the most endangered of the great apes. It is threatened by habitat loss, the bush meat trade and the trade in live primates. Photographed at the Lola ya Bonobo (Bonobo Paradise) Sanctuary, Democratic Republic of Congo

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a tender moment between an infant bonobo ape and its mother. As the young bonobo urinates, its caring mother throws sand over the urine, displaying a unique behavior observed in this species. The bonobo, also known as Pan paniscus or pygmy chimpanzee, was discovered in 1929 and is found only in a small area of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Sadly, it is considered to be the most endangered of all great apes due to habitat loss, bush meat trade, and live primate trafficking. The photograph was taken at the Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary in DRC—a haven for these remarkable creatures. Bonobos live in matriarchal and egalitarian societies where sexual activity plays a significant role not only in greeting but also conflict resolution and post-conflict reconciliation among members regardless of age or sex. This aspect sets them apart from other primates. Through this image, we witness not just a beautiful bond between mother and child but also gain insight into their intricate social dynamics. It serves as a reminder of the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these incredible animals from extinction. With their biological significance and parental care behaviors on full display here, let us strive to ensure that future generations can continue to marvel at the wonders of nature exemplified by these magnificent bonobos.
