Poster Prints From Royal Cornwall Museum
Polurrian Hotel, Mullion, Cornwall. 1899
A view of Cathedral Rock, Polurrian Cove, Polurrian Hotel and the coast looking north. The hotel was built in 1890 as a railway hotel to serve the now defunct Helston branch line. Perched on the edge of a cliff on the Lizard Peninsula, it was an impressive building appealing to distinguished guests. Guglielmo Marconi stayed at the hotel in 1901 while sending the first ever transatlantic radio messages from nearby Poldhu Cove. In 1909 a fire devastated the hotel, leaving it in ruins. Three years later, a new hotel was opened on the site. The only parts of the original structure that remained were the terraces and steps near to the tennis courts. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1899, capturing a breathtaking view of the Polurrian Hotel in Mullion, Cornwall. Nestled on the edge of a cliff overlooking Polurrian Cove, this grand hotel was originally built in 1890 as a railway hotel for visitors traveling along the now defunct Helston branch line. The Polurrian Hotel stands proudly amidst its stunning surroundings, with Cathedral Rock majestically rising from the sea nearby. Its strategic location on the Lizard Peninsula made it an attractive destination for distinguished guests seeking solace and natural beauty. One notable guest who graced these premises was Guglielmo Marconi himself, who stayed at the hotel in 1901 while pioneering his groundbreaking transatlantic radio messages from Poldhu Cove just moments away. However, tragedy struck in 1909 when a devastating fire reduced much of this architectural gem to ruins. Yet hope prevailed as three years later, a new iteration of the hotel emerged from its ashes. Only remnants like terraces and steps near the tennis courts remained as reminders of its former glory. This historic photograph captured by Herbert Hughes allows us to glimpse into an era long gone but not forgotten. It showcases not only picturesque views of cliffs and sea but also tells tales of resilience and rebirth that are deeply woven into Cornwall's rich tapestry.
