EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable specimen of Chalcocite with Chalcopyrite, discovered in the historic Tincroft Mine located in Illogan, Cornwall, England. The steel-colored crystals of chalcocite elegantly envelop the chalcopyrite mineral, forming a mesmerizing display. This particular variety of chalcopyrite is known as blister copper due to its botryoidal formation. The image originates from Philip Rashleigh's renowned publication "Specimens of British Minerals" published in 1797. Plate 9, Figure 4 depicts this extraordinary find and provides an insightful description: "Is yellow mammillary copper ore, covered with a thin coat of bluish-green color, with crystals of steel-colored copper ore composed of prisms having six sides and truncated ends". One can observe a magnified view capturing one of these fascinating steel-colored crystals. Chalcocite is classified as a secondary mineral that typically occurs within or near the oxidized zone of copper sulfide deposits. This exceptional specimen belongs to the esteemed Rashleigh Collection at Royal Cornwall Museum - an invaluable treasure for geology enthusiasts. Its composition includes elements such as copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and sulfur (S). The photograph beautifully captures the metallic luster and intricate structure exhibited by this unique geological marvel found deep within Tincroft mine
