Christ Mocked, Annie Walke (1877-1965)

Oil on canvas, Newlyn School, 1928. Annie Walke studied at Chelsea School of Art and under Augustus John at the London School of Art. She moved to Cornwall with her husband, Bernard Walke, when he became curate in Polruan. In 1912, they moved to St Hilary where they became friendly with many of the Newlyn artists such as the Procters and Munnings and, through them, the Lamorna group. Annie Walke was a wonderful painter of faces and expressions. In her religious paintings, often firmly rooted in the Cornish countryside, the faces of her subjects feel alive and contemporary to the time they were painted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Annie Walke's masterpiece, "Christ Mocked" a stunning oil painting that emanates vibrant colors and profound emotions. Created in 1928 as part of the renowned Newlyn School, Walke's artistic brilliance shines through her meticulous brushwork and attention to detail. Having honed her skills at the Chelsea School of Art and under Augustus John at the London School of Art, Walke moved to Cornwall with her husband when he became curate in Polruan. Immersed in the local art community, she formed close friendships with prominent artists such as the Procters, Munnings, and members of the Lamorna group. Walke's expertise lies in capturing human faces and expressions flawlessly. In this particular religious piece set against Cornish landscapes, she skillfully portrays Christ being mocked by a group of individuals dressed in vividly colored gowns and cloaks. The composition exudes an air of contemporary relevance despite its historical context. The artist's masterful use of reds, purples, pinks, blues, greens, and browns adds depth to each character while highlighting their individuality within this poignant scene. As we observe these figures kneeling on a green hillside backdrop reminiscent of Cornwall's picturesque countryside setting; we are transported into a moment frozen in time where mockery meets spirituality. Annie Walke's "Christ Mocked" is not only a testament to her exceptional talent but also serves as an enduring representation of Christianity itself – timeless
