Scotlands First Basic Education Centre. Soldier pupils whose ages range from 18
Scotlands First Basic Education Centre.
Soldier pupils whose ages range from 18 - 44 years, attended a first Army experimental course in Basic Education in Scotland. Twelve weeks ago they could neither read or write, but now, as a result of specialised and sympathetic instruction, the majority of them have acquired sufficient knowledge of the language to write their first letter home. All of them have learned enough to make out their own leave pass, before departing the Centre. The courses also include handwork teaching such as mending and darning and making toys - methods of the co ordination of hand and brain.
Picture shows a collection of completed toys made during the course which are either for sale or for soldiers families. Left to right are WJ Sharp (Pioneer Corps) of Kent showing his exhibit to Sergeant Instructor F. Lowe of London, and L/C F Matthews, Royal Scots, of Edinburgh, showing his exhibit to Major J McKerchan, Staff Officer, Army Education Corps.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in Scotland's history - the establishment of its first Basic Education Centre for soldiers. The image showcases soldier pupils, ranging from 18 to 44 years old, who participated in an experimental course aimed at providing them with essential education. Just twelve weeks ago, these brave individuals could neither read nor write, but thanks to specialized and compassionate instruction, the majority have acquired enough knowledge to write their very first letter home. The courses offered at the centre go beyond traditional academics and include practical skills such as mending, darning, and even toy-making. This approach aims to foster coordination between handwork and cognitive abilities. In this photograph, we see a collection of completed toys made by the soldier pupils during the course. These toys hold great significance as they are either available for sale or intended for soldiers' families. The picture also highlights some interactions between participants and instructors. WJ Sharp from Kent proudly presents his exhibit to Sergeant Instructor F. Lowe from London while L/C F Matthews from Edinburgh shares his creation with Major J McKerchan, Staff Officer of Army Education Corps. Taken around December 21st in 1943 by an official photographer from Memory Lane Prints, this print serves as a powerful reminder of how education can transform lives even amidst challenging circumstances like war.
