The first parking meterin England.
The first parking meters are introduced in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, London on 10th July 1958.
Picture shows The Mayor of Westminster, Mr David Cobold watching Mr GR Nugent, Parliamentary Secretary o the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, opening the scheme by placing a shilling in one of the meters.
The scheme was an experiment to start with. Sixpence in the metre allowed parking for one hour. A shilling in the metre for two hours, after which the vehicle must be moved and not returned to anywhere in that parking vicinity for over an hour.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Stepping back in time to the birth of parking meters in England, this print captures a significant moment in history. Taken on July 10th, 1958, at Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, London, it showcases the inauguration of the first-ever parking meter scheme. In this snapshot from yesteryears, we witness Mr David Cobold, the Mayor of Westminster, observing Mr GR Nugent as he ceremoniously opens the scheme by inserting a shilling into one of these novel contraptions. This experimental initiative aimed to regulate traffic and curb congestion within the bustling city. The rules were simple - sixpence granted an hour's worth of parking while a shilling allowed for two hours. However, once that time was up, vehicles had to be relocated and could not return to any nearby spot for over an hour. Transporting us back to an era when motoring laws were evolving rapidly, this image encapsulates both civic progress and public compliance with newfound regulations. As we gaze upon this nostalgic scene frozen in time amidst 1950s London ambiance; it serves as a reminder of how far our urban landscapes have come since then. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints' lens is not just a photograph but also a testament to innovation and adaptation within society's ever-changing needs.
