EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print from 1963, we see a group of Tibetan refugee children enjoying a day out at the seaside in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex. Dressed in their traditional national costumes, these thirteen boys and eight girls have found solace and hope at the Pestalozzi Village for Children in Sedlescombe. Having fled Chinese occupation and persecution, many of these children are now orphaned and displaced. However, through the support of this compassionate community named after Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, an influential Swiss educationalist from the eighteenth century who believed in holistic education for all individuals, they have been given a chance to rebuild their lives. As they explore the sandy beach with joyous smiles on their faces, it is evident that even amidst adversity, these resilient young souls find solace and happiness in simple pleasures. The photo captures a moment of respite from their difficult pasts as they soak up the sun's warmth and breathe in the salty sea air. This image serves as a poignant reminder of both the resilience of these Tibetan refugee children and the power of compassion to heal wounds inflicted by conflict. It stands as a testament to humanity's ability to come together across borders to provide refuge for those most vulnerable among us.
