This 19th century engraving depicts a pivotal moment in the history of Castile during the War of the Communities of Castile (1520-1521). The image captures the Holy Assembly of the Communities, a group of citizens from Castile and Leon, in session in the city of Ávila. In defiance of Emperor Charles V, they declared themselves the legitimate government and deposed the Royal Council. The assembly named Francisco de los Cobos y Molina, better known as Francisco de Padilla, as their Captain-General. The Communities' rebellion was a response to the heavy taxation and political dominance of the Crown. The assembly aimed to protect the rights and interests of the common people, leading to a significant uprising against the monarchy. The meeting in Santa Junta de las Comunidades took place in the Church of San Esteban el Real in Ávila, where the leaders of the rebellion gathered to discuss their grievances and plan their next steps. The engraving showcases the diverse group of rebels, including men of various social classes, gathered around their leader, Padilla, as they engage in an animated discussion. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the print provide a glimpse into the spirit and determination of the Communeros during this critical period in Spanish history.
