Born around 1174 in Abingdon, Berkshire, England, Edmund was educated at Oxford University, where he gained a reputation as a brilliant scholar and a man of deep spiritual conviction. In 1233, Edmund was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, a position he held until his death in 1240. During his tenure, he dedicated himself to the spiritual and temporal welfare of his flock, as well as to the promotion of learning and scholarship.
