EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the pivotal Battle of Anaquito or Inaquito, which took place on the outskirts of present-day Quito in 1546 during the Spanish Conquest of Peru. The battle was a significant turning point in the power struggle between Nueva Castilla, led by Gonzalo Pizarro, and the Viceroyalty of Peru, represented by Blasco Núñez Vela. Gonzalo Pizarro, the younger brother of Francisco Pizarro, the famous conqueror of the Inca Empire in 1532, had been appointed governor of Nueva Castilla in 1541. However, he soon grew discontented with the authority of the Viceroys and sought to expand his own power base. Blasco Núñez Vela, the new Viceroy of Peru, arrived in Quito in 1545 with the intention of asserting his control over Nueva Castilla. The two sides clashed at the Battle of Anaquito on July 26, 1546. The engagement was fierce, with both sides employing a variety of weapons, including lances, swords, and arquebuses. The battlefield was described as being covered in the bodies of the fallen, with the Spanish forces ultimately emerging victorious. The engraving, created in 1726, provides a visual representation of the events of the Battle of Anaquito. It depicts Gonzalo Pizarro and Blasco Núñez Vela leading their respective armies into battle, with the former emerging triumphant. The image offers a glimpse into the military tactics and weaponry of the time, as well as the intense nature of the conflict between the different factions of the Spanish colonial forces in the Americas during the 16th century.
