EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the haunting ruins of Fort Seddulbahr, also known as Sed Dul-Bahr or Seddulbahir, following the intense Battle of Seddulbahr during World War I in 1915. The Ottoman Turkish fort, located on the European side of the Dardanelles Straits in modern-day Turkey, once served as a crucial emplacement for the Ottoman Empire's defense against Allied forces attempting to seize control of the straits and open a direct route to the Black Sea. The Great War's fierce artillery duels and relentless ground battles left the once formidable fort in smoldering ruins. The image reveals a desolate scene of shattered walls, crumbled emplacements, and scattered rubble, bearing witness to the devastating impact of the battle. The remnants of the fort stand as a poignant reminder of the costly confrontation that took place over 100 years ago. The Battle of Seddulbahr, also known as the Second Battle of the Dardanelles, was a significant turning point in the Gallipoli Campaign. The Allied forces, led by the British and French, suffered heavy losses, ultimately leading to their withdrawal from the region. The victory for the Ottoman Turkish forces, under the command of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, marked a pivotal moment in Turkish history and solidified the country's determination to defend its territory. This historical photograph offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to reflect on the rich history of the region and the profound impact of war on the landscape and its people.
