Robbing the Orchard by Louis Wain

An unusual illustration by Louis Wain, more usually known for his cat drawings, showing a group of children stealing apples from an orchard. Interestingly, Wain has drawn the children in the style of Kate Greenaway, another ILN contributor. Wain was able to turn his hand to drawing a wide variety of subjects prior to the fame he achieved with his feline creations. Sadly his growing obsession with cats turned to insanity and he died penniless in a mental asylum in 1939

Robbing the Orchard

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing and unusual illustration by the renowned English artist Louis Wain, best known for his distinctive cat drawings. However, this charming piece, created in 1890, showcases a different side of Wain's artistic abilities as he masterfully depicts a group of children stealing apples from an orchard in the style of Kate Greenaway. Wain's versatility as an artist is evident in this historical illustration, as he skillfully captures the essence of childhood mischief and the beauty of the natural world. The children, dressed in Victorian attire, are depicted with the same delicate and detailed style that characterized Greenaway's work, adding an extra layer of interest to this image. Despite his early success in illustration, Wain's life took an unexpected turn. In the later years of his career, he became increasingly obsessed with cats, and his drawings began to reflect this obsession. Sadly, his fixation with felines led him to insanity, and he died penniless in a mental asylum in 1939. This fascinating illustration serves as a reminder of Wain's remarkable talent and the wide variety of subjects he was able to turn his hand to before the fame of his feline creations. The image is a beautiful and intriguing addition to any collection, offering a glimpse into the history of illustration and the life of a truly unique artist.
