EDITORS COMMENTS
This reconstruction drawing by A. Forrestier, based on materials supplied by the renowned anthropologist Sir Arthur Keith, offers a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric past. The scene depicts Neanderthal men in Europe and Africa, united by a land-bridge, working together to hunt mammoth fauna in a kheddah or corral. The corral, located in present-day Malta, was part of the land-bridge that connected the two continents over 25,000 years ago. Neanderthal men, our close evolutionary relatives, are shown in the drawing stampeding elephants and hippos into the cave using a clever hunting strategy. The animals, unsuspecting of the impending danger, are herded towards the entrance of the cave, where the Neanderthals are positioned, ready to take them down. The use of a kheddah or corral was an effective hunting technique used by early humans to trap large animals and increase their chances of success. The elephants and hippos, both common inhabitants of the African savannah, would have been formidable prey for the Neanderthals. The presence of these animals in Europe during this time is a testament to the interconnectedness of the two continents during the last Ice Age. Sir Arthur Keith, a prominent figure in anthropology, was a pioneer in the study of human evolution and the relationship between humans and apes. His collaboration with Forrestier on this reconstruction drawing provides valuable insights into the lives of our ancestors and the shared history of Europe and Africa.
