EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the intensity and chaos of the Battle of Pollilur, which took place on September 6, 1780, in present-day Tamil Nadu, India. The battle marked a significant victory for the forces of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan against the under-strength British army, led by Colonel Bailey. The Indian army, which included French mercenaries, is depicted in the foreground of the image, charging towards the British troops with a combination of cavalry, artillery, and infantry. Hyder Ali, a skilled military commander, had been waging a long-standing war against the British East India Company, seeking to expand his territories and assert his independence. Tipu Sultan, his ambitious son, continued the fight after his father's death in 1782. The Battle of Pollilur was a turning point in the war, as it marked the first major defeat for the British in South India. The Maratha Confederacy, which had previously allied with the British against Hyder Ali, also played a role in the battle, providing additional troops to the Sultan's forces. The French mercenaries, who are pictured at the top of the print, were a crucial element of the Indian army's strength. They brought valuable military expertise and experience from Europe, enhancing the Sultan's military capabilities. The print, which is part of the extensive collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in Indian and world history. It underscores the complex alliances and power struggles that characterized the late 18th century in South Asia and highlights the role of mercenaries in shaping the course of wars and political dynamics.
