EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases two vintage heavy machinery gems from the 1910s era, parked side by side. The Aveling & Porter BHO class Road Roller, registration number DM 3079 and number 7632, was built in 1912 at Rochester. Powered by a single-cylinder 5 Nhp steam engine, this road roller boasts an intriguing history. It was once owned by the renowned Steeplejack and television personality, Fred Dibnah. Dibnah, a celebrated figure in the preservation of industrial heritage, lovingly restored the road roller and named it after his first wife, Allison. However, following a divorce, he changed the name to that of his second wife, Betsy. Behind the Aveling & Porter Road Roller lies the Clayton & Shuttleworth General Purpose Engine, registration number CE 7943 and number 46059, affectionately known as Lucy Ashton. Built in the same era, this heavy agricultural machine is a testament to the engineering prowess of the past. The machinery transport scene in the 1970s was filled with such marvels, and this photograph encapsulates the essence of that era. Both machines, with their unique histories and stories, stand as a reminder of the rich industrial heritage that continues to inspire and fascinate us.
