EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pair of captured German 9.15 cm leichtes Minenwerfer System Lanz trench mortars from the First World War. The image, dated circa 1917-1918, showcases the intricacies of these weapons that were widely used by the German army during the conflict. The leichtes Minenwerfer System Lanz, or Light Trench Mortar System Lanz, was a type of portable mortar system that could be easily transported and deployed in the trenches. The mortars are seen here with their bipods folded and the barrels covered with protective cloths. The mortars were typically fired from a prone position, with the operator aiming and adjusting the elevation using a sighting mechanism located at the rear of the barrel. The mortar shells were propelled through a smoothbore barrel and flew in a high, arcing trajectory, making them effective for delivering explosives over the top of enemy trenches. The presence of a flight or aeroplane in the background adds an interesting layer to this image. Aerial transportation played a significant role in the First World War, with planes used for reconnaissance, communication, and even dropping supplies to troops in the field. The inclusion of an aircraft in this photograph may suggest that these captured mortars were being transported to a new location or being prepared for deployment in a different sector of the battlefield. Overall, this photograph offers a glimpse into the complexities of trench warfare during the First World War and the various tactics and technologies employed by both sides in the conflict.
