This evocative photograph captures a group of determined women lumberjacks at work during the First World War. The year was 1917, and as men were being sent to the battlefields of Europe, the need for labor in various industries back home became increasingly pressing. The lumber industry was no exception. In response, women from all walks of life stepped up to take on roles traditionally held by men. The women in this image are dressed in white overalls, their faces focused and serious as they saw through the trunks of trees. The trees, with their thick trunks and dense foliage, tower over them, a testament to the physical demands of their work.
