EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by James Basire for Edward Griffiths' seminal work "The Animal Kingdom" by the renowned naturalist Georges Cuvier, showcases two intriguing bat species: the Tailed Tailless Bat (Anoura caudifer) and the Greater False Vampire Bat (Megaderma lyra). The Tailed Tailless Bat, also known as the Tailless Glossophag Bat (Glossophaga ecaudata), is depicted on the left side of the image. Contrary to its name, this bat does possess a tail, though it is short and barely visible. Native to Central and South America, this bat is characterized by its long, narrow wings, pointed snout, and large, expressive eyes. On the right side of the engraving lies the Greater False Vampire Bat (Megaderma lyra), also known as the Megaderma Lyra Bat. This bat is easily recognizable by its large, wing membranes that extend beyond its body, giving it an almost wing-like appearance. The Greater False Vampire Bat is native to Africa and is not actually a true vampire bat, as it feeds primarily on fruit and nectar rather than blood. This stunning engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that defined Cuvier's groundbreaking work on natural history and zoology during the early 19th century. The intricate lines and vibrant colors of Basire's engraving bring these fascinating bats to life, allowing us to appreciate their unique beauty and intrigue over two centuries later.
