EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of camaraderie and determination between Lieutenant Turnor of the SGW (Special Reserve of the Great War) and Captain Sir F.S.G. Rose of the R Hussars (Royal Horse Guards) during the Battle of Zandvoorde in Ypres, Belgium, in 1914. The First Battle of Ypres, also known as the Battle of Ieper, marked one of the earliest major engagements of World War I and took place from October 19 to November 22, 1914. The battle saw the Allied forces, including the British Expeditionary Force, attempting to prevent the German army from advancing towards the Channel ports. Lieutenant Turnor and Captain Sir F.S.G. Rose, both distinguished military officers, are seen here in the midst of the battlefield, their expressions conveying a sense of focus and resolve. The photograph was taken at Zandvoorde, a small town located in the province of West Flanders, which was a significant site of fighting during the Battle of Ypres. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in this pivotal battle, and the enduring bond between comrades in arms. The photograph is a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who served during the Great War, and the importance of unity and perseverance in the face of adversity.
