This portrait depicts the revered Roman Emperor Theodosius I, also known as Theodosius the Great or Flavius Theodosius Augustus, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 378 to 395 AD. Theodosius is renowned for his significant role in consolidating the Roman Empire's power and unity, bringing an end to the Western Roman Empire's decline. Born in Spain in 347 AD, Theodosius rose through the ranks of the Roman military, eventually becoming a Caesar in 375 AD. He gained full control of the Eastern Roman Empire in 379 AD following the deaths of his predecessors Valens and Gratian. Theodosius' reign marked a turning point in Roman history, as he was the last emperor to rule both the Eastern and Western Roman Empires before they officially split in 395 AD.
