EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts the revered Roman Emperor Theodosius I, also known as Theodosius the Great or Flavius Theodosius Augustus, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 378 to 395 AD. Theodosius is renowned for his significant role in consolidating the Roman Empire's power and unity, bringing an end to the Western Roman Empire's decline. Born in Spain in 347 AD, Theodosius rose through the ranks of the Roman military, eventually becoming a Caesar in 375 AD. He gained full control of the Eastern Roman Empire in 379 AD following the deaths of his predecessors Valens and Gratian. Theodosius' reign marked a turning point in Roman history, as he was the last emperor to rule both the Eastern and Western Roman Empires before they officially split in 395 AD. This striking portrait, created as a copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaerts' De Roomsche Monarchy (The Roman Monarchy) published in Utrecht in 1697, highlights Theodosius' regal presence and authority. He is depicted wearing a diadem, a traditional Roman crown, and holding a scepter, symbolizing his imperial power. The background features an archway, possibly representing the triumphal arches in Rome, further emphasizing Theodosius' connection to the Roman Empire's rich history and legacy. Theodosius I's reign was marked by significant religious and political changes, including the Edict of Thessalonica, which established religious tolerance between Christians and pagans. His rule also saw the division of the Roman Empire into Eastern and Western halves, with his sons Arcadius and Honorius assuming the thrones of the respective empires. This portrait serves as a testament to Theodosius I's enduring legacy as one of the most influential Roman emperors, whose impact on the Roman Empire's history can still be felt today.
