EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled "Reptilien: Saurier," is an exquisite illustration from Lorenz Oken's Universal Natural History, Allgemeine Naturgeschichte fur alle Stände, published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1841. The meticulously detailed print showcases an impressive array of lizard varieties, each displayed with remarkable accuracy and artistry. Beginning at the lower left, we find the Lava Lizard (Dracaena guianensis), native to South America, with its vibrant colors and distinctive crest. Next to it is the Tropidurus Torquatus, or Collared Tegu, a South American species recognized by its distinctive collar and intricate patterns. Moving on, we encounter the Desert Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma platyrhinos), a North American species, with its prominent horns and unique camouflage. The Stellion, or Starred Agama (Stellagama stellio), is depicted in the upper left, with its striking star-like patterns and fan-like crest. The Sudan Plated Lizard (Gerrhosaurus major) is shown in the upper right, with its large size and distinctive armor-like scales. The Giant Ameiva (Ameiva ameiva) is illustrated below it, with its vibrant colors and long, slender body. The Mexican Beaded Lizard (Heloderma horridum) is depicted in the lower right, with its distinctive beads and venomous bite. Lastly, the Amboina Sailfin Lizard (Hydrosaurus amboinensis) is shown in the center, with its elongated tail and webbed feet, adapted for swimming in its tropical habitat. This stunning lithograph is a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of lizard species and their intricate adaptations.
