EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the male Rodrigues Solitaire, Pezophaps solitaria, a now extinct bird species endemic to the volcanic island of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean. The photograph is derived from a 1708 engraving, "Voyages de Monsieur de Lequat," by François Lequat, published in Amsterdam by Johannes Muller. The image was later reproduced as a heliotype by Van Leer for Dr. Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans' "Dodo Studies" in 1917. The Rodrigues Solitaire, also known as the Rodrigues Dodo, was a flightless bird with a distinctive appearance, characterized by its large, round body, small wings, and long, curved beak. It is believed to have been closely related to the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) and the Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica). The discovery of the Rodrigues Solitaire, like that of the Dodo, came about through European exploration of the Indian Ocean. The first recorded sighting was made by the Dutch explorer Olfert Dapper in 1665, and the last confirmed sighting was in 1693. By the late 17th century, the species had likely been extirpated due to human activities, including hunting and habitat destruction. This historic image serves as a poignant reminder of the unique and fascinating avian species that once inhabited the remote islands of the Indian Ocean. The extinction of the Rodrigues Solitaire, along with that of the Dodo and other flightless birds, highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
