EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jacob L. Admiral in the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects) published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774, showcases the enchanting transformation of the Gatekeeper butterfly, Pyronia tithonus. The image captures the adult butterfly gracefully perched on verdant grasses, its wings spread wide, displaying the intricate patterns and vibrant colors that characterize this species. The Gatekeeper butterfly is a member of the Nymphalidae family, commonly known as the brush-footed butterflies due to their distinctive hind legs. This butterfly is native to Europe and Asia, and can be found in various habitats, including hedgerows, meadows, and gardens. The engraving also illustrates the various stages of the butterfly's life cycle, including the caterpillar, larva, and pupa. The caterpillar, depicted in the bottom left corner, is shown with its distinctive brown and white stripes, feeding on the leaves of its host plant. The larva, or chrysalis, is shown in the bottom right corner, encased in a protective pupa, ready to transform into an adult butterfly. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the natural history illustration techniques of the 18th century, which combined the artistry of hand-coloring with the precision of copperplate engraving. The image not only showcases the beauty of the Gatekeeper butterfly but also highlights the importance of entomology and botany in the scientific exploration of the natural world during this period.
