This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 373, featuring the Broad-horned Hylaeus bee, specifically identified as Hylaeus dilatatus (however, recent taxonomic revisions suggest it may be more accurately identified as Hylaeus annularis, according to Fitton et al.). The plate, published between 1824 and 1839, was created by the esteemed botanical illustrator John Curtis FLS. The bee is depicted in its natural habitat, perched on the yellow flowers of Reseda luteola, commonly known as Weld or Wolds. The Hymenoptera order, to which Hylaeus belongs, is the largest order of insects, characterized by their winged members having two pairs of membranous wings covered by a thin layer of chitin. Hylaeus bees, in particular, are known for their slender bodies and distinctive broad, curved antennae, which give the Broad-horned Hylaeus its name.
