EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 274, featuring the Blue Lucanus or Platycerus caraboides, a once native Coleopteran beetle to Mainland Europe that is now extinct in Britain. The beetle is depicted gracefully perched on the petals of Iberis amara, commonly known as Bitter Candy-tuft, a plant native to Europe and western Asia. The intricate details of the beetle's metallic blue exoskeleton and the delicate folds of the Candy-tuft petals are beautifully rendered in this exquisite 19th-century engraving. The Blue Lucanus, a member of the Lucanidae family, was a large and striking beetle, measuring up to 7 centimeters in length. Its vibrant blue coloration made it a popular subject for naturalists and collectors during the 1800s. However, due to habitat loss and overexploitation, the species was driven to extinction in Britain by the late 19th century. This illustration is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, British Entomology, which was published between 1824 and 1839. Curtis, a renowned English botanist and entomologist, dedicated his life to documenting the natural history of Britain. His meticulous observations and accurate illustrations continue to be an invaluable resource for scientists and enthusiasts alike. The Ledipteran order, to which the Blue Lucanus belongs, includes beetles and their close relatives. The order is characterized by their elytra, or wing cases, which cover the wings when not in use. This adaptation provides protection for the insects and allows them to move about on land with greater agility. This stunning print is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the dedication of naturalists like John Curtis to documenting and preserving it for future generations.
