This handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt, titled "Sports and Pastimes of the People of England," showcases a fascinating array of board games popular during the 14th century in England. The intricately detailed illustration includes six distinct games that were once enjoyed by the masses. At the center of the image, we see the game of Fox and Geese, where one player represents the fox, attempting to corner all the geese, while the other player controls the geese, trying to escape. The game of Dice, represented by a pair of dice being rolled, was a simple game of chance, often played for recreation or wagering. To the left, we find Merelles, a game similar to checkers, where players move their pieces diagonally across the board, aiming to capture their opponent's pieces. The game of Chess, a strategic classic, is depicted in the upper left corner, with its familiar 64-square board and intricately designed pieces. The game of Circular Chess, also known as Chaturanga, is shown in the lower left corner. This ancient game, the precursor to European chess, is played on a circular board with 64 squares. In the foreground, we see the game of Tables, or Backgammon, with its 15 checkers on each side, moving between triangles and trying to bear off their pieces before their opponent. Lastly, in the upper right corner, we find The Philosophers' Game, also known as Mancala. This game involves moving seeds or stones between pits, with the ultimate goal of accumulating the most seeds in one's store. This illustration, created by Joseph Strutt in 1876, offers a glimpse into the rich history of board games and the pastimes that brought joy and entertainment to people centuries ago.
