Anne de Graville, also known as Anne, Dame de Montagu, was a prominent French poet and translator of the 16th century. Born as the daughter of Louis Malet, Anne's literary talents were discovered at a young age. Her poetry was deeply influenced by the works of contemporary poets such as Ronsard and Du Bellay, and she was known for her elegant and refined style. This handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard is based on a miniature in the manuscript of "L'Histoire de Berose Caldee," which is housed in the portfolio VIII 39 of Roger de Gaignières' "Costumes Historiques de la France." The image captures Anne in the height of 16th century fashion, with a flowing gown adorned with intricate patterns and a lace collar. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, and she wears a jeweled headdress that adds to her regal appearance. Anne's literary contributions were significant, and she is particularly known for her translations of classical works from Greek and Latin into French. Her translations of the works of Virgil and Ovid were particularly well-received, and she played a crucial role in the dissemination of classical literature in France during the Renaissance.
