EDITORS COMMENTS
This music cover showcases the popular song "Trab, Trab, or The Ride," performed by the renowned mezzo-soprano Jetty Treffz (Henrietta Treffz, 1818-1878) in a concert at Her Majesty's in the 1850s. The cover art depicts two young women in Victorian fashion, effortlessly riding donkeys on the sandy shores of Margate, a popular holiday destination in Kent, England. A young boy, dressed in the same era, is seen hitting the animals with a stick to encourage a faster gallop. The original German lyrics by Friedrich Wilhelm Kucken (1810-1882) begin with the lines "Upon the sands at Margate, one morning I espied / Two young and lovely damsels upon two donkies ride." The English version by Count de Horsey adds to the whimsical charm of the song. Jetty Treffz was the first wife of the famous composer Johann Strauss II (married in 1862) and a celebrated singer who made her debut in England in 1849 and appeared in two Jullien concerts in 1850. This cover art captures the essence of a leisurely Victorian seaside holiday, with the women wearing elegant dresses, parasols shielding them from the sun, and their bare feet touching the cool sand. The image is a beautiful representation of the 1850s, with the cliffs, donkeys, and riders creating a picturesque scene on the cliffside. The cover art also pays homage to the historical significance of the song, which was composed by Friedrich Wilhelm Kucken and popularized by Jetty Treffz. The galloping rhythm and lively melody have stood the test of time, making "Trab, Trab, or The Ride" a beloved classical piece that continues to resonate with audiences today.
