Members of the Search Party who found Captain Scott

From left: Sub-lieutenant Gran, Petty-Officer Williamson and Mr E.W. Nelson (biologist), members of the relief party who discovered the bodies of Captain Scott and his companions in the Antarctic Summer of 1912. They sighted Captain Scotts tent on November 12th, 1912, over seven months after the teams tragic death on their return from the South Pole. The men are more lightly clothed than might be expected as the Antarctic November is equivalent to a European June, and so they are wearing ski boots without any fur covering while Williamson is standing in his fur bed socks. Gran is handing out a ration of six biscuits, which are of special nutritive quality and very hard in texture

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Members of the Relief Expedition, Sub-lieutenant Gran, Petty-Officer Williamson, and Mr. E.W. Nelson, stand before the tent of the ill-fated Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his companions, discovered on November 12, 1912, in the Antarctic. Seven months had passed since the tragic events of Scott's return from the South Pole, where he and his team had perished. The trio, dressed for the Antarctic November, which is equivalent to a European June, are more lightly clad than one might expect. Gran wears a heavy parka, but the others are only in their ski boots without any fur covering. Williamson is even standing in his fur bed socks, a testament to the unexpected warmth of the season. Gran is seen handing out a ration of six hard and nutritive biscuits to the relief party. These biscuits were a crucial source of sustenance for the explorers, as their journey to reach the tent had been long and arduous. The discovery of the tent and the confirmation of the team's demise marked the end of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, an expedition that had begun with such high hopes and ambitions. This historical photograph, taken from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Prints Online, captures the moment of discovery and the bittersweet reality of the outcome of Scott's ill-fated journey to the South Pole. It serves as a reminder of the challenges and sacrifices made by explorers in the pursuit of knowledge and discovery.
