This evocative image captures Marie Tussaud (1761-1850), the Swiss wax model maker, in her old age. Born in Strasbourg, France, Tussaud began her career as a wax sculptor in Paris at the age of 17, working under the tutelage of Philippe Curtius. She quickly gained renown for her lifelike and intricately detailed wax figures, which she exhibited in traveling shows throughout Europe. In this photograph, taken likely in the late 1840s or early 1850s, Tussaud is depicted in her later years, with a fur-lined cloak draped over her shoulders and a bonnet adorned with a ribbon securing a bow under her chin. She wears a pair of spectacles perched on the bridge of her nose, a common necessity for those with aging eyes. The image captures the intensity and focus that marked Tussaud's entire career, as she continued to create new wax figures even in her old age.
