This striking portrait captures the enigmatic and complex character of Louis-Philippe, King of the French from 1830 to 1848, also known as the Citizen King. Born in 1773, Louis-Philippe was not of royal blood but rose to power through political maneuvering and popular support. He came to the throne during a time of great social and political upheaval in France, following the July Revolution of 1830 which overthrew King Charles X. Louis-Philippe's reign was marked by a commitment to constitutional monarchy and the restoration of order and stability. He was popular with the people, earning the nickname "Citizen King" for his efforts to address their concerns and improve their lives. However, his rule was also marked by controversy and opposition from various factions, including the conservative nobility and the radical republicans. Despite these challenges, Louis-Philippe remained a forceful and effective ruler, navigating the complex political landscape with skill and determination. He oversaw a period of economic growth and modernization, as well as cultural and artistic flourishing. This portrait, created during his reign, captures the intensity and charisma of a man who defied the traditional expectations of a monarch and forged a unique and enduring legacy. Louis-Philippe's reign came to an end in 1848, following the February Revolution which swept away the monarchy and ushered in the Second Republic. He went into exile, living out the rest of his days in England.
