This striking oval portrait captures Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894), the renowned Hungarian patriot and statesman, in military attire from the year 1850. Kossuth, who is considered a national hero in Hungary, played a pivotal role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 against the Austrian Empire. In this image, he is depicted wearing a military jacket with gold buttons and a fur collar, accessorized with a sash and a tall, plumed hat. His piercing gaze and well-groomed beard convey a sense of determination and resolve. Born in the town of Kisújbánya (now Košice, Slovakia), Kossuth studied law in Vienna and later served as a member of the Hungarian Diet.
