This striking oval portrait captures Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894), the renowned Hungarian patriot and statesman, in military attire from the year 1850. Kossuth, who is considered a national hero in Hungary, played a pivotal role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 against the Austrian Empire. In this image, he is depicted wearing a military jacket with gold buttons and a fur collar, accessorized with a sash and a tall, plumed hat. His piercing gaze and well-groomed beard convey a sense of determination and resolve. Born in the town of Kisújbánya (now Košice, Slovakia), Kossuth studied law in Vienna and later served as a member of the Hungarian Diet. When the revolution broke out, he became one of its most influential leaders, advocating for the establishment of a democratic Hungarian republic. After the revolution was suppressed, Kossuth went into exile, traveling extensively throughout Europe to rally support for the Hungarian cause. He is remembered for his unwavering commitment to Hungarian independence and his role in inspiring the Hungarian people to fight for their rights.
