EDITORS COMMENTS
John Singleton Copley's striking portrait of John, Baron Lyndhurst (1772-1863) captures the essence of this influential statesman and Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Lyndhurst immigrated to England in 1794 and quickly rose through the ranks of British politics. He was appointed Solicitor General in 1822, and later served as Attorney General from 1827 to 1830. In 1834, Lyndhurst was appointed Lord Chancellor, a position he held until 1841. This portrait, painted in 1833, shows Lyndhurst in full regalia as Lord Chancellor. He is depicted wearing the black velvet robe of office, adorned with gold lace and ermine trim, and the crimson velvet cap of maintenance. The crimson velvet tabs on the robe signify his position as a member of the Privy Council. The gavel in his right hand symbolizes his role as the highest judge in the realm. Lyndhurst's tenure as Lord Chancellor was marked by his efforts to reform the legal system and improve the administration of justice. He played a key role in the passage of the Reform Act of 1832, which expanded the franchise and reduced the power of the old oligarchy. He also worked to improve the conditions of prisoners and to establish legal aid for the poor. This portrait by John Singleton Copley is a testament to Lyndhurst's distinguished career in British politics and his significant contributions to the legal system. Copley's skillful use of light and shadow, as well as his attention to detail, bring the subject to life and make this a truly captivating work of art.
