This evocative image depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the two other evildoers outside the walls of Jerusalem, as described in the New Testament of the Bible (Matthew 27:38-66, Mark 15:22-32, Luke 23:33-43, and John 19:18-27). The scene takes place on a desolate hill, likely Golgotha, where the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus unfolded more than 2,000 years ago. The central figure in the photograph is Jesus, his body weakened and battered from the scourging and the weight of the cross. Nails pierce his hands and feet, and a crown of thorns adorns his head.
