EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait of Jean-Paul Marat, painted by Joseph Boze in 1793, captures the intensity and radicalism of one of the most influential figures of the French Revolution. Marat was a journalist, politician, and physician, best known for his publication of the inflammatory newspaper "L'Ami du Peuple" (The Friend of the People). A fervent Jacobin and a key figure in the Cordeliers Club, Marat was a vocal advocate for the rights of the common people and played a pivotal role in the fall of the Bastille. As a deputy in the National Convention, Marat's fiery speeches and relentless pursuit of justice earned him both admiration and fear. His unwavering commitment to the cause of the revolution, as well as his role in exposing the conspiracy of the King's enemies, made him a hero to many and a target for assassination. Tragically, Marat was stabbed to death in his bath by Charlotte Corday, a royalist sympathizer, on July 13, 1793. This painting, now housed in the Carnavalet Museum in Paris, offers a glimpse into the complex and passionate character of Jean-Paul Marat, a man who dedicated his life to the cause of the French Revolution and left an indelible mark on European history.
