HMS Marlborough leaving Istanbul, Turkey - August 1923

Photograph from the deck of the HMS Marlborough as the 4th Battle Squadron (along with HMS Iron Duke, HMS Benbow and the HMS Emperor of India) - leaves Istanbul for the final time, bound for Malta. In August 1923, the Allied Powers turned over Istanbul to the Nationalists, marking the final departure of occupation armies from Anatolia. This card marks the occasion of the Allied Generals handing over the custody of the city at the Dolmabahce Palace. HMS Marlborough was an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, named in honour of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Built at Devonport Royal Dockyard between January 1912 and June 1914 and entered service just prior to First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, Marlborough took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War (in the Black Sea 191920). She was also involved in the Greco-Turkish War. Date: 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment as HMS Marlborough, proudly flying the White Ensign, bids farewell to Istanbul, Turkey, in August 1923. The 4th Battle Squadron, including HMS Iron Duke, HMS Benbow, and HMS Emperor of India, sets sail for Malta, marking the final departure of Allied occupation forces from Anatolia. The Allied Generals had recently handed over the custody of the city at the Dolmabahce Palace, symbolizing the end of a significant chapter in Turkish history. HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, was named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard, she entered service just prior to the First World War. Post-war, Marlborough was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet and played a crucial role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. This photograph, taken from the deck of HMS Marlborough, offers a poignant reminder of a bygone era, as the Iron Duke-class battleship sails away from the shores of Istanbul, leaving behind a rich and complex history.
